Introduction to The Taiwan Society for Anthropology and Ethnology (TSAE)
The Taiwan Society for Anthropology and Ethnology (TSAE) is founded on the legacy of its predecessor, the Chinese Ethnological Society, which was established in Nanjing on December 16, 1934. Since the Society moved to Taiwan, anthropology has developed consistent and extensive interests in local issues for nearly seventy years. To reflect the reality that this Society is a scholarly community based in Taiwan, on June 26, 2005, the Society renamed to Taiwan Society for Anthropology and Ethnology.
Since the 1990s, there have been an increasing number of undergraduate and graduate programs related to anthropology in several colleges. In spite of such robust growth, the Society did not function effectively in playing the role as a public forum connecting and engaging anthropological institutes. In recent years, in order to strengthen our sense of community and to address the ever-changing social reality of Taiwan, TSAE has reorganized itself as a platform of dialogues for scholars and students committed to anthropology. For instance, in 2007, the first meeting of TSAE incorporated paper presentations as part of the regular program. Since then, the meeting has been held annually and expanded in size. In 2009, TSAE collaborated with The Society for East Asian Anthropology (SEAA), an officially recognized section within the American Anthropological Association (AAA), for the annual meeting in which more than 400 anthropologists and related scholars from around the world participated.
In addition, TSAE started to publish AnthroVisions in 2008, which replaced the old newsletter as the basis of communication among members. Through enthusiastic exchange of ideas, AnthroVisions has introduced new anthropological studies and their multiple dimensions and social implications to public purview.
We sincerely hope that our collective work will find support among scholars and students interested in anthropology and continue its social relevance. Along with your participation, TSAE will break new grounds for research to make significant contributions to Taiwan and global human communities in the 21st century.
