From the Margins of the Centre: Australian Anthropology’s relationship to the world (of anthropology)

|About the Talk:

Australian anthropology occupies an unusual position in global knowledge networks — representing neither a Northern centre nor a peripheral tradition. This talk traces the development of Australian anthropology through its Indigenous entanglements, applied practice, and Asia-Pacific orientation, arguing for a decentred discipline in which Indigenisation, vocation, and global collaboration are taken seriously.

|Time: April 16, 12:30 PM (Taipei Time)

|Speaker: Dr. Gerhard Hoffstaedter

Gerhard Hoffstaedter is Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Queensland, specialising in forced migration, refugee studies, and Southeast Asian ethnography. He co-leads Maritime Refugee Lab, documenting Rohingya maritime journeys and refugee experiences. He directs the World101x anthropology MOOC, teaching tens of thousands to think anthropologically globally, and was a 2024 Lee Kong Chian NUS-Stanford Fellow.

|Facilitator: Dr. Chun-wei Fang

Fang Chun-wei (方鈞瑋) is a Taiwanese anthropologist, curator and museum professional specialising in Indigenous cultures and Austronesian studies. He is Head of the Division of Exhibition and Education at the National Museum of Prehistory. He holds a PhD from the Australian National University (2016).

Fang has conducted research with Austronesian communities across Taiwan and internationally and has played an active role in Indigenous museum development, exhibition-making and cultural interpretation, with a particular focus on cultural revitalisation.
